Where to Take Someone Who Has Been Everywhere

Six less predictable Saint Petersburg restaurants for a date

When the familiar places are already behind you, the answer is not necessarily a more expensive restaurant. Change the format instead: dinner in an old apartment, a dark room with vintage furniture, or no light at all.

Six different reasons to go out together. Not every place is intimate, and not all are right for a first date; it is better to know that before booking. Each has its own character and a few details worth considering.

1. EM · A dinner guest on the Moika

Not another designer dining room, but a restaurant in an old apartment. Historic walls, stucco, paintings, and small tables. The open kitchen is built around an English AGA cast-iron cooker, and the seasonal tasting menu changes every three months.

Choose EM when dinner itself is the plan. The format is the point: instead of picking from a dozen familiar dishes, follow a sequence created by the kitchen. It feels more like being invited to someone's home than simply going out to eat.

Why go together: for an unhurried dinner in an old apartment setting. A good fit if you both enjoy trying something new without turning the date into a noisy show.

Before you go: check the current menu and mention any dietary restrictions in advance. Ask how long dinner will take; do not schedule another appointment right afterwards. This format is hard to squeeze into a spare hour.

2. Closer · Fire, big windows, and Tavrichesky Garden

Tall windows overlook the ponds of Tavrichesky Garden, and a wood-fired oven warms the room. Historic wooden frames and patterned tiles have been restored; the furniture is individually selected, including a Carlo Scarpa table and Cab 412 chairs.

There is more to it than the interior. The oven turns out Neapolitan-style flatbreads, including an unusual smoked-grape combination. That gives you a concrete reason to go beyond the good-looking photos.

Why go together: for an unusual setting and an easy dinner where you can eat and talk without a long programme. Ask for a window table, especially if you arrive before dark.

Before you go: ask for the specific seating you want, rather than just a “nice table.” Check the current menu too; it is disappointing to arrive for a dish that is no longer available.

3. Giallo · Italy without the postcard clichés

Instead of the usual Italian look, Giallo draws on cinema: 1960s vintage furniture, lacquered wood, and a vinyl collection. The food is familiar enough: pasta, Roman-style pizza, fish crudo, and seafood.

Giallo has two different rooms. The first fills with daylight from large windows. The second is dark from the start, like a study, with an old sofa, records, and a wine cabinet. We would choose that one for an evening.

Why go together: for a more composed evening atmosphere without excessive formality. Change the scenery without putting your date through a culinary exam of unfamiliar ingredients.

Before you go: confirm which room your table will be in and whether you can sit on the sofa. A dark interior does not guarantee quiet or privacy; the exact table matters more than the overall look.

4. LETH · When dinner gives you something to talk about

LETH describes its cuisine as sensory, using aroma, sound, colour, and visual presentation alongside taste. There are specific programmes behind the idea; Analog Frontier, for example, is a tasting menu that uses VR.

Choose from the regular menu or book a separate tasting. The distinction matters: in one case the restaurant is a backdrop for conversation; in the other, you agree to give the programme more of your attention.

Why go together: if you enjoy comparing impressions, debating flavours, and trying unfamiliar things. The dinner gives you a shared experience to talk about.

Before you go: decide whether you want conversation or a food experiment. Then check availability, duration, and dietary restrictions. Do not assume every tasting menu can be ordered spontaneously.

5. KIRA · Dinner in an old album factory

KIRA occupies a former album factory on Kirochnaya Street. High ceilings and industrial architecture sit alongside soft sofas, plants, and distinctive lighting. It is a real building with a history, not a set dressed to look industrial.

The menu brings together Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking: ravioli with white fish, for example, and lamb tagine with prunes. Choose something familiar or try a different cuisine without committing to a tasting menu.

Why go together: for an attractive space without a rigid dinner script. A good choice if you enjoy looking at architecture and interiors but do not want a long sequence of courses.

Before you go: this is a large restaurant with a children's club, not an intimate room just for couples. Ask for a table away from the family area and main passage, and check whether an event is scheduled nearby.

6. Dans le Noir? · A date without the view

Dinner is served in complete darkness, not candlelight or a dim room. Blind and visually impaired guides lead guests; phones and other light sources stay outside.

Before entering, choose a menu category and the number of courses. The exact dishes remain a surprise until the end. Instead of taking the usual photos first, you focus on the flavours and the person across from you.

Why go together: for an experience that changes the familiar format of a date. It suits a couple curious to try something unusual, rather than simply find a new backdrop for photos.

Before you go: do not spring complete darkness on someone as a surprise. Check that the idea feels comfortable to both of you. Mention allergies and dietary restrictions when booking. An unusual experience does not have to suit everyone.

A few details that matter more than a big name

When booking, ask for what you actually need: a table for two away from the aisle and speakers. If you want a sofa or window seat, say so. Confirm the request with the restaurant rather than assuming it is guaranteed.

If you choose a tasting menu, check how long it takes and whether dishes can be changed. If you choose an unusual experience, make sure it appeals to both of you. Surprising someone and making them uncomfortable are two different things.

A good place gives you a reason to meet. The rest happens between the two of you.

Tell the manager what kind of evening you are planning.
