Moscow for Two: Six Places for Different Evenings

Sometimes you want a table where you can finally talk. Sometimes you feel like dressing up and going out. And sometimes you are free only at ten in the evening but are not ready to call it a night.

Six Moscow addresses for dinner with someone you like. Each has a different mood. Choose by the kind of evening you want, not just by how famous the restaurant is.

The figures below are food estimates for two: usually two starters, two mains, and two desserts. Drinks and tips are extra. They are our estimates based on published menus, not a fixed dinner price.

1. Sage · When you want a proper conversation

Pale wood, soft colours, warm lighting. We would choose Sage for an evening without a special occasion: meet after a long week, have a decent dinner, and stop checking the time after every course.

The menu has pasta, fish, meat, and vegetable dishes. It is easy to put together dinner for different tastes without negotiating every choice. Smart casual clothes and an open evening feel more at home here than a grand night out.

Note: the restaurant closes at 11 pm. For a conversation, ask for a table away from the open kitchen and the main passage. A calm interior does not guarantee a quiet room when it is busy, so ask about the music when booking.

2. BURO. TSUM · When you feel like dressing up

On the fifth floor of TSUM, with large windows, soft sofas, and the city beyond the glass. This is a place to plan a proper evening together rather than meet in passing. A birthday, a small personal milestone, or an ordinary Saturday made a little more special.

The interior makes a statement, but dinner need not become a parade of expensive orders. Choose pasta, fish, or meat from the menu. If the view matters, ask for a window table in advance; a standard reservation does not guarantee one.

Note: the restaurant stays open until midnight. Enter from Petrovka or take the lift inside TSUM. If you arrive late, check when the kitchen takes its last order.

3. Margarita Bistro · An easy dinner and a walk afterwards

A small, bright bistro by Patriarch's Ponds. Textured leaf-patterned walls, wooden tables, and windows looking onto the city. A good plan for a low-key evening: eat, talk, then decide whether to take a short walk.

The menu has shrimp gnocchi, pasta, fish, and vegetables. Stay for dessert if you like; the walk does not have to be a mandatory part of the plan. We would pick this for a first dinner or an evening when dressing up and making an event of it feels unnecessary.

Note: the bistro closes at 10 pm. Meet earlier so you do not have to rush dinner before closing. And do not assume a small room will necessarily be quiet.

4. Alexey Kozlov Club · When music matters more than background noise

Sometimes it is better to listen to something together than spend the evening inventing new conversation topics. Have dinner at a concert venue: tables, a stage, low lighting, and music worth putting your phone away for.

Choose the performer first, then the date. For an evening together, that matters more than a nice photo of the room. The club has a full menu, including beef stroganoff, duck breast, and fish. You can eat there without adding a separate restaurant stop.

Note: this is a concert, not background music for a loud conversation. Check the venue address, stage, and seat locations on your ticket; the club has several halls. Save a longer conversation for before the show or during the interval.

5. Café Pushkin · When the evening starts late

Some days, you can only get to dinner after all the meetings and calls. You still want somewhere that feels like a night out, not a quick bite before bed.

Café Pushkin has its own atmosphere: wood, bookcases, set tables, and a touch of old-Moscow theatre. The photo shows the Library room. Build the evening around Russian dishes: beef stroganoff, fish, honey cake, or Napoleon cake.

Note: the late-night schedule does not apply every day. According to the published hours, the restaurant stays open continuously from Thursday morning through Sunday; Monday to Wednesday it closes at midnight. For a late visit, confirm which room and night menu are available. The Library in the photo is not guaranteed for a night-time booking. A cocktail dress code is listed for evenings.

6. Severyane · Dinner with fire and character

12/1 Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street

A dark dining room, candles, colourful tableware, and an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven. We would choose Severyane for a change from the usual restaurant scene: less formality, more live fire and attention to the food.

Order a few dishes to share. Start with camembert baked in ash on brioche, then try duck confit or halibut with spinach. For dessert, plum with smoked ice cream. A good option if you both enjoy food and talking about it.

Note: the restaurant is open from 9 am to midnight. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, reservations are taken by phone or messenger. If you want a table suited to conversation, ask about its location when booking.

When booking, say what matters to you: a quiet conversation, a window table, seats by the stage, or a late arrival. Ask when the kitchen takes its last order. Kitchen hours and restaurant hours can differ.

Leave some breathing room in the plan. A good dinner does not need three more stops afterwards.
